About the Artist

Melissa Ellen is a self-taught mixed-media artist based in Nashville, Tennessee, whose work merges collective memory with modern perspectives. Drawn to history and storytelling from an early age, she creates layered paper collages using repurposed magazines, vintage books, maps, and found paper. She is drawn to materials that already carry a sense of lived experience, blending nostalgia with curiosity and inviting viewers to see familiar imagery through a contemporary lens.

Her work often features animals and figures chosen for their quiet emotional resonance. Through the hands-on process of cutting and layering paper, fragments of modern life surface within timeless forms, encouraging viewers to linger and make their own connections.

Before returning to art full-time, Melissa worked in print design and later founded and ran a magazine and online marketplace. After stepping away to raise her family, she returned to her creative practice with renewed focus and intention.

A native Tennessean, Melissa now lives and works in Nashville with her husband and four children. She creates from her home studio, layering history, memory, and culture into pieces that feel personal, thoughtful, and grounded in place.
